The Voting Rights Act of 1965

• Section 203: Certain jurisdictions that meet population and literacy requirements must provide live voting assistance and any election-related information they make available in English in the covered language(s) as well.

• Section 208: Any person who needs assistance as a result of blindness, disability, or the inability to read or write, including voters who have difficulty with English, can receive assistance from a person of their choice, as long as it is not an agent or officer of the voter’s employer or union. 

Language Assistance in Elections – Alaska 

Language assistance is available in some dialects of Yup’ik/Cup’ik, Cup’ig, Gwich’in, Inupiaq, Denaakk’e (Koyukon Athabascan), Tagalog, and Spanish. Bilingual election workers can assist voters, or voters may have a person of their choice* provide assistance. Need language assistance when you vote? *Family member, friend, or other person of your choice. Not your employer, or an agent of your employer or union. Helper must respect the voter’s privacy, and may go into the voting booth to help the voter cast his or her ballot.
